This place is one of my favorite gyms I’ve ever been to. Chad, along with the other trainers, has been incredibly kind and generous, always keeping me informed about their free trial periods and bring-a-friend weeks, which happen frequently! The classes strike the perfect balance between fun and challenging, providing exactly what I need for my fitness journey. The community is warm and welcoming; I've met several trainers and long-term members who made me feel right at home. The gym's equipment is top-notch, and the place has a ton of room, so it's never crowded. I appreciate the option to take the equipment outside too, especially if I’m going long cardio workouts. Personally, I take advantage of the free access to the UNC gym since I am still a student and have a low salary, but I genuinely think this place offers a great value if you have the means, and I look forward to becoming a member after graduation (or as soon as I get a real job). Dropped in on a random monday and was able to attend open gym on my own. Chad was extremely professional and they had great equipment that was well taken care of, and a crew even came by to clean after I finished my workout. Definitely going to drop in again if I am in the area.

A super friendly gym. Helpful and knowledgeable instructors… plenty of space and equipment. Great sound system and well heated for those early morning training sessions. As a visitor from the UK I can’t recommend this gym enough. Kristen is an inspiration.

I compete in hyrox and Spartan, train at a ninja gym with calisthenics. This was my first time at a CrossFit gym and loved how friendly and welcoming everyone was. The coach, Chad, was excellent at making sure you were working at the level that challenged you without going too far at whatever level someone was at. Great experience.

Such a great place to make my body fit, learn various exercises. Everyday I feel new trying different types of physical activities. The coaches are very well trained and give us individual feedbacks which I highly appreciate. It’s also such a great opportunity to get to know nice folks in this neighborhood!

My wife and I did a drop in workout on Monday morning. The gym is laid out very well, but the real highlight was how friendly and helpful the coaches were.

I came for an open gym guest pass and had a great experience. The owner promptly requested to my inquiry and gave clear instructions of how to get into the gym. While there, the coaches were very kind and welcoming to a stranger in their gym. They have all of the equipment that you would expect in a CrossFit gym and plenty of racks, bars, and plates.

This Gym hosted an amazing 2023 Olympic Weightlifting Spring Fling ! The meet ran smoothly and the announcer gave great enthusiasm the entire time. I would love to participate in another competition hosted by them.

Had a great experience at the 2023 Spring Fling! Chad, and his team are friendly and well organized. The meet ran smoothly, and was a lot of fun. We had 10 of our own athletes compete from ECU, and there was enough equipment for them to use for warming up. We will definitely be back at the next meet!

This is a fantastic gym! Tons and equipment and super nice people. On top of that, I felt like every coach I worked with was extremely knowledgable and really cares about each individual. I dropped into this gym for a week while I was visiting my In-laws and it was fantastic! The facility is big and nice and has everything you’d want for crossfit. The coaches were great and the members were inviting and encouraging. Would definitely join this gym if I lived in the area!

I got super into crossfit while in college this semester and was looking for a place to continue while home on break.. CrossFit Local does a good job of training its coaches and supporting beginners. I was brand-new to CrossFit when I started, and I explored a few other gyms in the area, but gravitated back to CrossFit Local because of the quality of its coaching and its greater attention to safety and properly scaling workouts.

My resting heart rate is 51 BPM after years (decades!) in the sixties. I can bench 255 pounds, clean and jerk 160, and I can do unbroken sets of 64 pushups. After nine months of working out at CrossFit Local, I placed in the top one third of eleven hundred elderly… um… “masters” athletes worldwide in the Open competition for my age group. Owners Chad and Kelly Edwards have built a wonderful fitness-oriented community. During special events such as a skills class or the recent CrossFit Open, they provide childcare in the “club house” just outside the gym. Every so often, Kelly sets up and facilitates weight-loss programs, complete with prizes for accomplishments. Chad is always willing to provide one-on-one coaching. You’ll find healthy recipes on their Facebook site, protein and pre-workout supplements in the lobby, and there is always a “Local Hero” working out when you enter the gym… always inspiring! Differentiating the place even more is the cadre of well educated and certified coaches, always eager to help. All have patiently entertained my questions and provided super insight. I’ve received tips from Coach Paul on power lifting and from Coach Kevin on my techniques and balance. I’ve discussed the cardiovascular system with fabulous distance runner Coach Josh (Hyden). I’ve learned the basics of handstand pushups and wall walks from Coach Grace. I try not to wonder if I remind Grace of her grandfather… I don’t mind being dad-age to the rest of them! And oh my, the “Local Heroes!” From my perch on a rowing machine, I’ve watched Coach Michael do sets of very impressive “muscle-ups”. If you don’t know what those are, Google it and be amazed! Yes, young Grace can do them too! I’ve also observed Coach Marc load up a barbell with multiple heavy plates to conquer with his dead lifts. And I have followed on Facebook Coach Kristin’s successes in “strong woman” competitions she competes in around the state. The only coach I don’t know is Josh Fox, but I drew him as a judge for one of my Open workouts and he was kind and forgiving of my poor form, not giving me any of the dreaded “No-reps”. I am sure many of the other old guys were also getting away with what they could, so I don’t feel too bad about it. And speaking of Local Heroes, Justin Huckaby… “Coach Huck” …. is there almost every evening, working out in preparation for the CrossFit competitions and teaching the rest of us anything we ask about. I just checked Justin’s performance in the 2022 CF open and he is in the top 4-5% of CrossFit athletes worldwide. One thing I’ve observed about Justin is that each day he comes in with a plan, scrawls it on a little white board, and proceeds methodically through the exercises and lifts he’s determined to complete for the day. Several times I’ve seen him accomplish PR’s as he progresses. Not to mention the awe of watching him scamper up the climbing rope! Finally, there is Coach Spenser Smith. Like many of the coaches and athletes at CrossFit Local here in academically oriented Chapel Hill, Spenser is highly educated… in his case, Spenser is a Doctor of Pharmacy. I’ve leveraged his knowledge several times in addition to taking in inspiration by watching his workouts. As an example, Spenser taught me about the “three energy pathways” employed by us humans to keep ourselves going. Great gym with friendly coaches. I dropped in for a workout while visiting family over the holidays, and the team at CrossFit Local made it so easy. Stepping into the gym I noticed everyone was well spaced, masked, and inviting. Classes under program was great / challenging. Open Gym had multiple options with members willing to test the WODS with me. 100% coming back when I visit NC again.

This is a great gym! I get bored easily, so I liked the variety of programming. The coaches and members are all very friendly and are super supportive, whether you're chasing a specific long-term goal or need a little boost to get you through a particularly brutal workout. I've been coming to Crossfit Local for several years. It's the only gym program I've ever stuck with because of the warm and encouraging atmosphere and the variety of exercises.

During the winter I like finding a gym I can lift and workout. This past Winter I signed up for CrossFit Local's open gym membership and it was great! Fantastic facilities, very friendly and supportive coaches, and plenty of squat racks! Would definitely sign up again during the colder, rainier months.

I was looking for a place to get back into working out, and found CrossFit Local. They offer a 6 week Ignition program which I did twice and loved, as well as many weekly classes with scaled and beginner options. I started CrossFit Local in January as a guest of the Golden Ticket promo. I have enjoyed getting to know the coaches. They are excellent and encouraging. The members at the 9am classes are encouraging as well. I feel that I have progressed in my fitness since starting there. Definitely a 5* experience!

I’ve been to boxes all over the US and this one is top notch! I’m so happy that I chose to go here after relocating to NC. The members and coaches are amazing. I’ve seen coaches that just go through the motions to maintain safety but these guys legitimately get excited about helping people to achieve their goals.

And because both the members and coaches are that way, it makes me want to "show up, and go 'til I can't" again and again. (Yes, I still have to stop to catch my breath frequently, because I CAN'T keep up with many of the workouts - but I get nothing but encouragement from the people around me. And every time - every time - I get farther than I did the time before.) Progress has been slow and steady, and it's beginning to snow-ball. I see the results in how far I get now in the workouts, as well as in the mirror and on the scale. I came to Local as a regular powerlifter looking for a gym with lots of weights and fun training toys like sleds, fat grips, battling ropes, and tires. I was nervous about coming to a "box", but Chad, Kelly, and everybody else were exceedingly welcoming. In my time I grinded out some PRs on my big lifts, learned how to Oly lift, and loved every minute of every goddamn 6 AM workout. I would highly recommend CrossFit Local to anyone looking to explore their fitness (but if you haven't worked out in a while, maybe take it easy on the first day, yeah?), whether they're a newbie-in the which case you'll find plenty of friendly coaches and workout buddies-or if they're a longtime lifter looking to switch things up a bit. At Local you'll find a family. They're weird: they dress up for the Halloween WOD and they also do CrossFit, which is weird enough in itself. But they'll push you and when you don't want to come they'll give you a call and say, "Hey, at least come foam roll with us." Less

Loved the workout routine and everything the gym had to offer, so I signed up! I was scheduled to work my new management job the next day. Found I had a ton of work to do and needed to put in double overtime for a few months. Chad was kind enough to ignore the signing date on my contract and wave my payments until I actually was able to make it in to the gym on a regular basis. I really enjoy my time at CrossFit Local! It's tough, but I continue to see results. There is a tremendous sense of team and the coaches are skilled and ensure correct form and execution. I would highly recommend CrossFit Local to anyone, since the workouts are all scaleable based on individual ability.

My relationship to CrossFit Local has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I started out early on, joining as a member after my personal trainer started to do classes there where I quickly found that it was more than just a place to work out. It was a unique community of diverse folks who all shared one thing in common: a commitment to being the best people we can each be. For some people, a gym is a place to see and be seen. For others, it's a place to feed an exercise addiction. For still others, it's a something that you do because you're told it's what you have to do. For the members of CrossFit Local, it's a little of all that and more. We come to get cheered on new personal achievements and to witness our friends experiencing the thrill of breaking through. We come because being healthy and getting fitter are simply the benefits of a regimen that ends up making you look your best both in and out of clothes. We come because we know someone will miss us if we don't show up and give it our best. Then recently I was notified that I could NOT participate in an upcoming Saturday WOD unless I signed up for it (which costs $30) since it would be a PR Challenge event. Big problem in that one of the 3x per week that I go is on Saturdays. Now I have paid for something that I cannot use unless I pay more? You must be kidding. They did mention that of the $30 entry fee that $20 would go towards "prizes" at the end. Who cares about the prize money. So let me get this straight - I pay approx. $130-140 per month to workout (i.e. WOD) and now I have to pay another $30 just to participate in a Saturday WOD? This just does not seem fair. When my membership is over I will most likely be looking at other Crossfit gyms. Buyer beware. Less

There are many Crossfit boxes but Local stands out. The coaches are engaged and invested in your goals and progress. WODs are great. You consistently see results in both strength, fitness, and mobility.
